  • Evaluated risk and opportunities, compared alternative technologies, and modelled lifecycle availability of waste to treat
  • Drafted technical and financial reports in French for senior EDF engineering and strategy teams

Outcome: The study directly contributed to EDF signing a partnership with Veolia for nuclear waste treatment approximately one year after the internship.

  • Researched improvements to the simulation of two-phase water transfer (heat and moisture diffusion in porous media) for radioactive waste disposal facilities
  • Developed Python-based computational models to exploit the periodicity of boundary conditions (temperature, humidity) at multiple time scales, dramatically reducing problem complexity
  • Reduced simulation runtime from over 10 days to under 1 day — a 10x+ speedup with no loss of accuracy
  • Presented findings to the ANDRA scientific team as part of an École Polytechnique research placement
